About Facelift Surgery
Plastic surgeon Dr. Smita Ramanadham provides a full spectrum of facial cosmetic surgery in East Brunswick, NJ. One of the most popular surgeries at our facility is a facelift. This procedure focuses on specific areas of the face to address loose skin and wrinkles to create a younger, softer appearance. Based upon your unique concerns, a facelift can focus on the eyes, the mid-face area and cheeks, the bottom portion, including the mouth, jowls, neck, and more for an all-over younger look. The facelift method used depends on your desired outcome, the health and condition of your skin, the degree of skin laxity, age, lifestyle, and other influences. Some individuals may be candidates for a full facelift while some may only want a mid-face lift. Dr. Ramanadham is a skilled surgeon who understands the complex anatomy of a facelift procedure. The goal is to produce a natural appearance that is soft and beautiful.
"Dr. Ramanadham is one of the most skilled and compassionate doctors I have ever seen. She produced fantastic results with the treatments she recommended, and she also was clear in steering me away from other treatments that I thought I wanted but she didn't think I needed or would work well for me. I have seen her for botox treatments and skin care advice and treatments for over two years."- _. / RealSelf / Feb 07, 2019

"Beautiful and clean office. Dr. Ramanadham is extremely knowledgeable and informative. I had some questions on some trouble spots I wanted to address and she was patient in explaining all my options. I also appreciate that she didn’t push anything I didn’t want, like many doctors in my past have done. I feel very happy with the work I ended up getting done and would and do recommend her to as many people as I can. Her office staff, Jodi, is extremely personable as well and makes my visits a very pleasurable experience!"- C.F. / Google / Jan 07, 2020

Candidates for facelift surgery are bothered by visible lines and facial wrinkles whether it be the face as a whole or on the upper, mid, or lower sections. A facelift can target many aspects, depending on your unique needs. It is also important to note that age does not always define the appropriate time to have cosmetic facial surgery. There are countless factors and concerns, and also numerous lift methods, depending on what is being corrected. The facelift chosen will be different for patients who are 35 years old versus those in their 60s and 70s. Skin elasticity is one of the key factors in the decision-making process. Patients should be physically healthy and be a nonsmoker, as well as have expectations that are realistic.
Depending on your individual needs, there are a number of facelifts available. Some facelifts rejuvenate the upper area of the face, and others focus on the lower two-thirds. Furthermore, some procedures are a bit more invasive than others. It is very common for some men and women to have a brow lift, forehead lift, or BOTOX and fillers to enhance their results. Some of the more known facelift methods include:
- Full Facelift
A common surgery for older adults, the full or "traditional" facelift generally puts an incision along the hairline, extending down to the temples, stopping near the base of the ears. The deeper layer of facial muscles is gently stretched and tightened to create a lifted look, which softens excessive lines and wrinkles. The traditional facelift is used for men and women who have signs of aggressive aging. During a full facelift, many procedures may be used, including upper or lower blepharoplasty to address the eyes or neck reduction for the lower region.
Using a similar technique to the mini facelift, the mid-facelift (cheeks) addresses the sagging near the cheekbones, as well as the upper jaw. The mid facelift works nicely for those who seek improvement in the middle to lower region of the face, including the jowls.
- Lower Facelift
This particular facelift corrects the neck and chin and sometimes the jowls. Methods of a nonsurgical nature, such as Kybella injections, can also be applied for chin augmentation to obtain a softer, tighter neck.
- Mini Facelift
When undergoing a mini facelift, a small incision is placed near the ears to lift the skin, which affects the mid to lower face. This method creates nice and subtle enhancements that look beautiful and natural.
What to Expect
Following your procedure, we will monitor your health until you can be safely released to be taken home by a friend or family member. Prior to your facelift, Dr. Ramanadham or someone on her staff will schedule your follow-up visits and discuss suggestions to help you heal properly. It's normal to have swelling and puffiness, slight to moderate pain, and soreness, which may be reduced by pain medication. You should feel and physically look better after 2 – 4 weeks. You can expect a softer, more youthful appearance. Overall, your face will appear slightly lifted and rejuvenated.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a facelift cost?
The total cost of your facelift will depend on the technique and other factors. In your consultation, Dr. Ramanadham will create your unique treatment plan to match your needs and goals. When this is complete, she can go over estimates of fees. To avoid unnatural-looking results, it is better to concentrate on finding a skilled surgeon, like Dr. Ramanadham, instead of the lowest price. Our practice can give you information on low-interest medical financing that will make your facelift affordable.
Which technique is best for me?
The best surgical facelift technique for you will vary based on your concerns, goals, level of skin laxity, what areas of your face are being addressed, and other factors. To produce your best results, Dr. Ramanadham will discuss the different surgical techniques in your consultation. She can then help you choose which technique is best.
Should I receive a surgical or nonsurgical facelift?
Although there are several great noninvasive skin tightening treatments, these can usually only give you small improvements. For moderate to severe skin sagging, facelift surgery is the best choice to significantly improve your appearance. In your consultation, Dr. Ramanadham will discuss your choices, including nonsurgical procedures, to help you decide which is best for your needs and goals.
What about wrinkle fillers and relaxers over facelift surgery?
Wrinkle fillers and relaxers, like BOTOX and Juvéderm, have become more popular in recent years to improve fine lines and wrinkles. Also known as a liquid facelift, nonsurgical wrinkle treatments can help with early signs of aging; however, the results will not last more than 1 – 2 years. A facelift will produce more significant improvements than injectables with long-lasting results. Ask Dr. Ramanadham about nonsurgical wrinkle treatments in your consultation.
Will my results look natural?
Some patients worry that a facelift will make their skin look shiny, overly tight, or like they are in a wind tunnel. Dr. Ramanadham focuses on giving you results that look natural so you appear refreshed, not fake. She listens to your concerns and goals before creating your custom treatment plan to produce your best results.
